Barbara Gooding was born on September 15, 1941 to Robert and Marjorie Gooding, and was baptized less than two weeks later at St. Thomas the Apostle in Woodhaven, New York. She entered the congregation of the Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk just shy of her 18th birthday and professed her final vows in 1965. Originally, she went by the religious name of Sr. Amadeus.
Sr. Barbara was known for her intellect, and she earned her BS in Classical Languages from St. John’s University, her MS in Religious Education from Fordham University, and held a certificate in Adult Education from the Catholic University of America. As an Ursuline, she was a dedicated teacher. She was particularly devoted to sharing her faith with children through after-school religious education. She directed these programs at St. Joseph Church in Babylon (NY), Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church in Deer Park (NY), and oversaw adult education at Our Lady Queen of Angels in Medford (NY).
Sister was called to serve her community beyond teaching with great joy and dedication and her ministry extended past New York and Connecticut and to Louisiana, where she worked as part of an AIDS care team and with professionals providing mental health to those in need while serving a local parish in an area where priests were scarce.
Sr. Barbara, who in her retirement helped care for aging sisters and lived a life of prayer, was called home to eternal life on October 26th. At the time of her death, she had been an Ursuline Sister for 66 years. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk (www.tildonkursuline.org).
